Policymakers must balance innovation with safeguards to protect reliability.

Looking ahead, journals globally may require standardized AI-use disclosures and consider random screening of non-analytical sections. Detection will improve but remains imperfect; authors may remove telltale phrases, and future models may mimic human variability more closely. A concerning possibility is a feedback loop: AI-generated literature reviews or phrasing could become training data for future models, eroding originality and factual grounding. This risk could be amplified for Thailand, where a smaller research corpus means local AI-assisted text could feed regional models without proper verification.

There are practical opportunities as well. Managed use of LLMs can help Thai researchers overcome language barriers, speed manuscript drafting, translate technical concepts for public audiences, and produce clearer educational materials. Used as editing assistance rather than as an author, AI can raise productivity and clarity. Crucially, verification remains essential: AI can hallucinate citations or data, so factual content must be checked against primary sources. Thai funders and universities can invest in training that teaches prompt design, fact-checking workflows, and responsible disclosure norms.

To act now, Thai journals should require a straightforward AI-use disclosure form for submissions, specifying how AI was used in drafting, editing, or translating. Editorial teams should train staff and reviewers to spot suspicious patterns while accommodating nonnative writers by offering language-editing support and a fair transition period. Universities should add short courses on responsible AI use to research ethics curricula, and supervisors should discuss acceptable AI practices with students and researchers at project planning and thesis stages.

Funding agencies and policymakers can support transformation by funding national AI-in-research guidelines, creating a help line for ethical AI questions in manuscript work, and sponsoring open tools that help Thai researchers check AI outputs without exposing unpublished data. Given detector biases, public investment should include locally validated tools developed through Thai collaborations, and ASEAN partnerships can help harmonize standards for cross-border submissions and shared datasets.

For individual researchers and authors: use AI only for drafting, language polishing, and formatting—not for generating primary analyses or new claims; keep logs of prompts and outputs; verify every AI-produced fact, reference, and table against original sources; and acknowledge AI assistance in the manuscript’s methods or acknowledgments. Supervisors should require prompt logs with drafts, and peer reviewers should treat AI-declaration statements as standard practice, focusing on originality, rigor, and reproducibility rather than style alone.

In public communication, Thai journalists and officials should verify major claims and ensure raw data are accessible. Given sensitivity around health and technology, clear labeling of AI-assisted text and verification before wide dissemination will build public trust. Educational campaigns that explain AI’s role in writing—distinguishing language help from substantive contribution—will help readers assess claims and reduce misinformation.

Policy incentives matter. Thai institutions should align promotions and funding with verified, reproducible science and reward transparent AI practices. Senior academics should model disclosure and mentorship, reinforcing integrity and collective responsibility in Thai research culture.

The headline finding from the international study is a call to action for Thailand: adapt with calibrated policies, training, fair detection methods, and a culture of transparent AI use that strengthens research integrity while embracing productivity gains.
